ATC Trial Summary

This trial will examine how well an innovative, multi-faceted intervention using clinical pharmacists to facilitate alcohol use problems and alcohol use disorder (AUD) pharmacotherapy and specialty addiction treatment entry works.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for adult members of the KPNC who visited primary care in Oakland or San Francisco between 2020 and 2021. It includes around 250,000 patients, about 300 primary care providers (PCPs), chief physicians, PCPs, and medical assistants at intervention clinics.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The ATC Intervention is being tested to see if clinical pharmacists can help with alcohol use problems and encourage entry into specialty addiction treatment through a telemedicine consultant service.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial focuses on a consultation service rather than medication or procedures, there are no direct side effects from the intervention itself.

ATC components include in-exam-room, real-time videoconferencing or phone contact with the PCPs and their patients, asynchronous, rapid response consultation via email or phone. ATC consultants will offer a flexible service that includes: Direct patient contact, via video or telephone, during primary care visits Motivational Interviewing (MI) - informed facilitation of patient engagement in addiction treatment, Advice to PCP regarding patient-specific treatment options, including pharmacotherapy, addiction treatment, and combined treatments
Group II: Usual CareActive Control1 Intervention
Usual Care (UC) will consist of treatment as usual, standard and systematic alcohol screening as part of the "rooming" process conducted by medical assistants, and brief interventions and referrals to addiction treatment delivered by PCPs. PCPs can also prescribe the same AUD medications as those in the ATC arm.
