Common treatments for prostate cancer, such as surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy, have various side effects. Ga-68 PSMA-11 and piflufolastat F-18 are approved for PSMA-targeted PET imaging in males with suspected prostate cancer recurrence based on elevated PSA levels. Additionally, lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan has been approved for treating PSMA-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. These treatments utilize radiotracers that bind to the Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA), enabling more precise imaging and targeted therapy.

What other types of research exist?

A promising novel alternative to PSMA PET scans for prostate cancer patients is the multifunctional 18F-labelled PET tracer that combines a PSMA inhibitor with a hypoxia-sensitive moiety. This tracer aims to provide better diagnosis by targeting both PSMA and hypoxic regions within tumors, potentially offering enhanced imaging precision.

Significant prostate cancer: Gleason 3+4 ≥1 core with pattern 4 ≥20% OR ≥3 cores of Gleason 3+4 OR Any Gleason 4+3, 4+4, 4+5, 5+4, or 5+5

This trial will test whether adding a PSMA PET scan to the standard of care MRI scan before surgery helps doctors better understand the cancer and leads to better patient outcomes.

Who is the study for?

Men with significant prostate cancer planning to undergo surgery can join. They should have a certain level of prostate cancer severity, based on Gleason scores, and wish to maintain erections post-treatment. Men with any serious health issues, participating in other radiation trials recently, or unable to stay still for imaging due to physical limits or claustrophobia cannot participate.Check my eligibility

What is being tested?

The trial is testing if adding a PSMA-PET scan alongside the standard MRI before surgery provides better information than just the MRI alone. The study will see if this extra scan changes surgical plans and improves outcomes by comparing two groups: one gets only an MRI and the other gets both an MRI and PSMA-PET.See study design
